Born in Van Buren County, Mich. on Jul. 12, 1876, Mattie Viola Sisson Crandall Allen, daughter of George R. and Susan Sisson, married Alfred J. Allen on May 19, 1919 in Detroit. Her first marriage had been to Preston E. Crandall, a railroad conductor in Grand Rapids. They had a daughter, Hazel, who was born in 1895.
